We may have crossed paths – we may be living in the same part of the world – we may have the same hobbies – we may like to travel to the same places . . . so here I tell you more about myself.
Grew up in Maryland. First years of college was in God’s country – the Shenandoah Valley: James Madison University (it was Madison College when I entered my Freshman Year). I joined a group of guys who wanted to meet the requirements of a national fraternity – we signed a charter with Sigma Pi Fraternity – it was very exciting to actually build the fraternity from our small group. I worked at Massanutten Ski Area – the Ski Repair shop . . . I recall that my boss was Bob Bender. A great job for a guy to have on the weekends only 20 minutes from the university.
A car accident changed my trajectory. Back to Maryland to do landscaping for a few years. Then I got the itch to go back to school – Japan was all the rage at that time (1983). I went to a big school – like a small city: The Ohio State University. I ended up staying in Columbus for 20 years. I picked up a strong interest in Asia during those years. An unexpected turn was the broad range of international students I met. “When the student is ready – the teacher will appear”, as the saying goes – I obviously had a strong interest in the people of other cultures – and language.
